Merillon Challengers Softball
Special Soccer, Special Olympic
Basketball Spring 2010

The Merillion Athletic Association of New Hyde Park is proud to offer our Challenger Softball Program for handicapped children.  This will be our 19th year in offering this program.  The program features experienced coaches, high school and college students who give individual instructions to your child.  We offer three levels of instruction depending on the child’s age and ability.  In addition to weekly practice we play a few games with other Challenger programs and participate in the annual Nassau County Challenger Softball Tournament.  In addition, the young adult and the teen aged teams have the option to register on our Merillon Special Olympic Team, which has started playing in Special Olympic Tournaments.  We will be hosting our Challenger Softball Tournament on September 26th.

We accept children with any physical, mental and emotional disability from mild to severe.  Boys and Girls from 6 to 19 are eligible.  The young adult team will accept players from 19 to 35 years.  The cost is $60.00, which includes a team shirt, hat and trophy.  We play at the Merillon field complex located on Marcus Avenue between Lakeville Road and New Hyde Park Road, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday nights starting April 09th thru June 19th.

In addition, The New Hyde Park Wildcats Soccer Club offers an excellent, free Special Soccer program starting on Saturday morning, April 10th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Center Street School.  Many of our children participate in both programs.

We are also pleased to announce our new third program, Special Olympic Basketball, sponsored by the local Knights of Columbus that runs from January to April on Thursday nights at the Manor Oaks Elementary School in New Hyde Park.  The first session is from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for the smaller children, and the bigger athletes play from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Please give these programs a try and join the fun.  You will be pleased with the enjoyment your child receives from learning a sport, making friends, and participating on a team.  Everyone is invited.  Please have your child bring a friend.
