The Mustangs went all out in the come from behind 8 inning thriller. Down 4 - 0 after a shaky first inning the Mustangs settled down and played brilliant defense behind the fantastic pitching of Alex Katz who went 6 innings, while fanning 9 Wildcats. He was followed on the mound by Danny Luchino who also worked his pitching magic to keep the Wildcats within range. With the score 4 - 3 Wildcats, Danny Luchino led off the 6th inning with a booming triple to right field. Danny scored on a ground out by Matt Hirshon to tie the score at 4 each. Twice with the bases loaded the Mustangs were able to escape defeat by ending the Wildcats rallies, once in the 5th inning and again in the 7th inning. However the Wildcats loaded the bases again in the 8th on 2 walks and a single setting the stage for a thrilling ending. With 1 out and the bases juiced the Wildcat batter launch a fly ball to right field where Brian Renta was waiting for the ball. Brian grabbed the fly ball for the 2nd out and fired a strike to catcher Aaron Brenner who could not handle the big hop allowing the winning run to score. The loss was a hard one to handle but the boys played a fine game and captured 2nd place in the Williston Park Mayors Trophy Tournament. The coaches and parents are extremely proud of the Mustangs ball players. The Mustangs are, Aaron Brenner, Joey Carbone, Matthew Hirshon, Alex Katz, Danny Luchino, Stephen Popovich, Andrew Pugliese, Brian Renta, Michael Ring, Nicholas Simeoli, Patrick Theodoropoulos and Ben Todaro. Great Game and Great Season! Hats off to the Champion Wildcats!

Merillon All Stars Are Champs Again—Winning Streak at 19
By Rich Finkel
A year ago at this time, the Merillon 8 year old All Star team won the HBQVB baseball tournament in dramatic fashion, coming behind in the final inning to defeat a tough Island Trees team.
Flash forward a year. They’re 9 now, and they’ve done it again. Only this time drama was replaced by domination. With all phases of their game clicking, Merillon’s All Stars won 8 consecutive games without defeat en route to their second straight HBQVB championship.
For good measure, they also won 5 consecutive games against strong competition in the Mid-Island tournament. That’s 13 consecutive victories in 2005, on the heels of 6 straight wins in 2004, and back-to-back championships!
19 in a row and repeat champions! Think these kids are good? Ask Plainview, Franklin Square, Plainedge, Merrick, Seaford, Floral Park, Manhasset, Oceanside, Port Washington, Ozone Park-Howard Beach, Central Nassau, Long Island Express, and Hicksville, all of whom played valiantly but went down to defeat at the hands of Merillon’s All Stars.
How did they do it? It started with the hard work and dedication of their manager Jimmy Richards, and coaches Andy Kostel, Eamon Ward and Lori Carrick. The staff did a phenomenal job, not only in preparing the kids for this summer, but in guiding them through each play of every victory. Almost every kid is a shortstop and pitcher on their spring teams, yet they worked, practiced and adapted, and when it came tournament time, no team was more fundamentally sound and ready to play baseball than the Merillon All Stars. That’s a tribute to the coaching staff.
They did it with pitching. Nick Perrone, Travis Finkel and an emerging Brennan Scanlon were often untouchable. While the parents paced and closed their eyes (and the moms tried to figure out which one was their son—that’s why they have numbers mom), these kids coolly delivered like seasoned veterans. Chris Ferlazzo and Liam “Wild Thing” Slattery also came up big on the mound, while last year’s pitching hero Tyler Carrick moved over to first base while he recovered from an arm injury.
They did it with defense, starting at catcher. Joey Richards was a workhorse, blocking balls, picking kids off, and throwing out would be basestealers. The infield of Nick at third, Travis at short, Denes Kostel at second, and Tyler played flawlessly, gobbling up everything within reach. And who could forget that perfectly turned double play against Merrick. Frankie over to Chris, who flipped to first for two. Awesome. The outfield of Justin Diamond, Smilin’ Frankie DiSanto, Austin “Bubble Gum” Ward, Brennan, Chris and John Leva was also outstanding, shagging flies, backing up and hitting the cutoffs just like they worked on. They also stepped into the infield and performed perfectly when called upon.
They did it with hitting. The table-setters Joey and Denes always seemed to be on base for sluggers Travis, Nick and Tyler, each of whom hit some highlight reel bombs. Nick hit one against Merrick that’s still going. Frankie and Austin, when they weren’t scorching line drives, were beating out bunts. Justin, Liam, Brennan, Chris and John also delivered, contributing with their bats and their blazing speed on the basepaths. Next year, it will be a race to see who the first is to hit one out.
Most importantly, they did it with teamwork. The kids love to play together, they’re supportive of one another, and while they all have the drive to win, they do it respectfully. They’re good kids, who happen to be great ballplayers.
Thanks again to the coaches and kids for a great summer of baseball and fun. Will next year be a Three-Peat?

By: Larry Lum
The River Sharks proved that they were the best team in the Majors on Championship Saturday by beating a strong and surging Road Warriors ball club. Sharks MVP Mike Cascio provided clutch hits and closed out the victory with 3 innings of shutout pitching. Steve Curran and Brendan Lum also contributed to the championship with fine pitching efforts. Key defensive plays were made by Steve Curran behind the plate, Eric Weinstein in left, Josh Ratner in right, Will Rezin in center and Steve Ambrosio at short. Josh Ratner, Dave Leibell, Joe Citriniti, Joe Thomas, and Jesse Molina added key hits and at-bats. The Sharks' success was a total team effort all season long, and Manager Bill Curran would like to express his heartfelt thanks to all of the coaches and parents, as well as the various and sundry supporters of the team. Congratulations River Sharks!!!
Congratulations to the Boys Majors Division 2nd PLACE WINNERS the "ROAD WARRIORS"
By: Mike Luchino
Hats off to the “Champion River Sharks” who totally dominated the Warriors in this game. After defeating 2 extremely talented teams the Warriors seemed to be on a roll but the wheels fell off against the Sharks. However, on the bright side after finishing the season in 5th place what we were able to accomplish in the playoffs and being able to take the 2nd place trophy was a total team effort and nothing to be ashamed of. All of the Warriors contributed to the turn around and were; Robert Scatorchio, David Luchino, Matt Dillon, Louis Simione, Nicky Clifford, Danny Spratt, John Fitzgerald, Pat McGonigle, Kevin Gagnon, Matt Miller, Harris Rivkin and Johnny Mahon. Coaches Rich, Mike and I would like to thank the players and parents for a fantastic season and playoff run. Way to go Warriors!

The Devil Rays became champions on Saturday! They defeated a very good Expo team. Congrats to Expos on a great season! Conor Breen, Joe Carbone, Gabriel Diamond, Mitchell Finkel, Mark Jason, Thomas Jaklitsch, Trevor Kriegel, Harrison Marder, Andrew Nikolai, Hansel Pachero, Salman Poonawala, and Andrew Pugliese. As each one of you boys turn into young men, always keep in your heart your championship season. Always keep your heads high, and know that there is not anything you can not handle. It has been my pleasure to manage you all, and hope to see all of you on the field in the future. I would like to thank my friend, and coach Joe Carbone, who has always been there for me, and the team. Thanks to Paul Jason for keeping the book like a pro. Thanks to all the parents who came to every game and rooted for the kids, and supported Joe and I. I would also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Schwalbach, who sponsored this team. They were both in attendance on championship Saturday, and were proud of the Devil Ray victory. I was happy to personally thank them both and assure them their contribution is greatly appreciated! It is a shame we can't freeze time, but this Devil Ray team will be frozen in my heart forever!..... Go Rays!! and a healthy happy summer to all!

Everyone loves a parade, and everyone loves a gorgeous spring day and we had both. Merillon Athletic Association held its annual Opening Day Parade this past Saturday, April 16th and not only was the sun shining but so were our ball players. All of Merillon's divisions were on hand to march in the parade. Led off by our Instructional Division and followed up by our boys Juniors Division. The New Hyde Park Memorial High School Marching Band set the beat and the players marched from Manor Oaks Elementary School west bound along Hillside Avenue and then north up New Hyde Park Road to Merillon Park. Spectators smiles lit up the parade route. Once at Merillon Park newly elected League President Thomas Murphy started the proceedings followed by the National Anthem played by the New Hyde Park Memorial High School Marching Band under the direction of Nick Tarantola. Everyone was then treated to NHP Memorial High School Romanettes. Guest Speakers were Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman. Also on hand was Legislator Richard Nicollelo. Thomas Murphy then presented the Merillon Coach of the Year Award to Mr. James Richards. (see article below) A special presentation was then made introducing to the crowd the both of Merillon's District 28 Championship teams from 2004, along with their coaching staff, pictured below. Finishing off the festivities were hot dogs and sodas to all of the Merillon Players and siblings. What a great day!

Jim Richards
The 2004 Joe Roy coach of the Year Award is presented to Jim Richards.
Jim got started with Merillon in 1999 coaching his son Kenny in the Instructional Division. In 2000, he was appointed to Division Director for the Boys Farms Division. In 2001, Jim was elected to the Board of Directors as Player Agent, a very demanding position handling all administrative work for approximately 700 players. Besides coaching his son Kenny in the Majors Division he also coaches his younger son Joey in the Upper Farms Division.
In 2004, Jim was elected Vice President of the Little League Boys Division. This position encompasses all players in the Farms, Minors and Majors Divisions and his duties include overseeing all tryouts, drafting of teams and scheduling of games. Jim is presently still Vice President of Little League.
As a manager and coach Jim has accomplished numerous noteworthy achievements. Included in these achievements was the winning of the Diamond Pro tournament in 2002. In 2003, he won the Williamsport District 28 Tournament Championship for 9 and 10 year old boys and this team was actually one of the top 4 teams on Long Island. Later on that year this same team won the Merillon Fall Championship. In 2004, he won the Williamsport Tournament District 28 Championship again this time with the 11 year old boys and finished in 2nd place for the Long Island Championship. In addition, in the summer of the same year he took his 8 year old boys team and won the HBQVB championship.
Besides all these achievement Jim’s greatest attributes are off the field. His dedication to the League and to his children is exemplary. He spends countless hours with his teams all year long teaching the children the fundamentals of baseball and to be graceful in losing and winning. I take great pride in saying Merillon is lucky to have a man like Jim giving 100% all the time.
We would like to congratulate his wife Kathy and his sons Kenny and Joey on having such a unique husband and father and to thank them for sharing him with the rest of us at Merillon Athletic Association.

On Saturday, March 12th, the Merillon Field House was buzzing with baseball. Managers and Coaches met with their Division Directors to draft their teams for our Spring 2005 Season. Even though the fields were covered with snow (see pictures below) the excitement of the up coming season began the thawing process. A ton of man hours were put in by Jack Kelly (our Player Agent) and Jim Richards (Vice President of Little League) in setting up for the drafts enabling each team to start off the season on equal ground ensuring that all of the children can have the same opportunity to excel. Their efforts should be congratulated because once again this year the draft went very smooth with hardly a ripple. Great Job Guys! Also on hand was Chairman of the Board, Tony Camilleri lending his hand in the Boys Majors Division draft.
Managers were instructed to notify each of their players this coming Wednesday, March 16th, so you will be receiving a phone call shortly. A good time was had by all and Jim Richards even snapped pictures, see below.
Lets all have a safe and enjoyable Spring 2005 Season!
